It’s not a vacation, just a change of scenery. The King and Queen have not yet closed their official agenda, although at the end of this week they will move their residence to Palma, where they will alternate public activities with others of a private nature. It will be barely ten days until, after fulfilling their commitments to the island and with the Copa del Rey Mapfre regattas, the King and Queen, together with their daughters, Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofía, begin a private vacation period.
The King, who together with the Queen and her daughters, attend today in Galicia the offering to the Apostle Santiago, will arrive in Mallorca next Thursday. The Queen, who has an agenda in Madrid until this Wednesday, will travel to the island, along with Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofía, throughout the weekend.
Upon arrival, the Head of State will hold the traditional audiences with the Balearic authorities this Friday at the Almudaina Palace and Queen Letizia is scheduled to attend the closing ceremony of the Atlàntida Mallorca Film Fes for the last Sunday in July, where she will deliver the prize of the contest to the French actress Isabelle Huppert.
The official activities of the King in the first days of August include the office, in Marivent, with the Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, scheduled for August 2, and a trip to Colombia, between August 6 and 8, to attend the inauguration of the new president Gustavo Petro.
After a few years suspended due to the pandemic, the King and Queen will again offer the reception to the representatives of the Balearic institutions and society, although there will be a change of scenery: instead of in the Almudaina Palace, it will take place on August 4, in Bellver Castle. It is the only official act in which the King and Queen appear together with Queen Sofía, who has already settled in Marivent, where she will remain until the end of August.
And those would be all the official activities that will be truffled with the participation of the King in some of the regattas and activities of the Copa del Rey Mapfre, which this year celebrates its 40th anniversary, and with the family inn somewhere on the island of Mallorca .

The design of the days in which the King and Queen move their residence from Zarzuela to Marivent has not changed in recent years, in the same way that the decision to spend, from August 10, a few days of private vacation remains unchanged .
The one that was conceived as a summer residence and that during the reign of Juan Carlos I became a symbol of royal vacations, is now the intermediate step between the activities of the rest of the year and the authentic vacations. Gone are the days when Marivent was the scene of what was called summer diplomacy with visits from other royal houses and audiences with personalities.

During the ten years in which they were Princes of Asturias, Felipe and Letizia shared the first days of August in Marivent with the kings Juan Carlos and Sofía and, later, they left for an unknown destination. After the proclamation of the King, in 2014, the same format has been maintained: a few days in Palma and then a few days of rest in an unknown destination, without criticism for the opacity of his private vacation time having made a dent.
Evidently, the President of the Government is aware at all times of the place where the King is located and he remains reachable and operative for matters of State, also ready for his immediate return to Madrid in the event that his presence is necessary.
La Zarzuela, however, maintains, before public opinion, the total secrecy of the place chosen by the King and Queen for their private vacations, given the difficulty of justifying the choice of another destination, almost always outside of Spain, Marivent being a summer residence which, in addition to the cost of maintenance throughout the year, guarantees the safety of the royal family.
The transparency measures, rigorously applied by the King, in the rest of his activities and functions, are not fulfilled in the period of private vacations, a decision, initially imposed by the then Princess Letizia, to enjoy, at least a few days, of family intimacy. This summer, if there are no last-minute surprises, which could be anything, given the institution’s ability to adapt, the scheme will be repeated.
