Florida tourists alerted by false vacation rentals

Vacation homes or apartments that are rented for short stays and vacations are common in coastal or highly touristy areas, but they are also often the target of scams by unscrupulous people who take advantage of foreign and local visitors.

In this situation, Ashley Moody, who is the current attorney general for the state of Florida, in the United States, issued a statement to the public warning of summer rental scams.

“Florida is one of the most popular vacation destinations in the nation. Scammers will take advantage of this by creating fake vacation rental listings in hopes of stealing personal information and money.. Whether you’re traveling within the state or from out of state, make sure you take extra precautions when renting a vacation home to avoid getting burned out this summer vacation season”, Said the prosecutor in a statement to the public.

Meanwhile, he explained that one of the most common ways to fall for the scam is when, through posts on social networks or advertisements, the person in charge of the home requests that a deposit be made in advance with which the property would be insured.

However, once the tourist falls for the scam, these ads disappear, as does the contact number and the scammer along with the money. Even, there are times when it is only until the tourist arrives at the place of his vacation that he realizes that the house he supposedly rented does not exist, and the owners of the address do not appear either.

According to the state attorney, these types of scams collect millions of dollars each year. For this reason, a call was made to the public to report any scam that has been generated through this modality through official channels.

And among the recommendations issued so that tourists do not fall for this scam are the “check if rental property photos are affiliated with other listings by using a reverse image search”since on many occasions the same photos are used in different offers and advertisements.

“If something looks suspicious, ask for additional photos of the ad; use a reputable rental website that offers fraud protection or offers payment transfer options; pay a rent with a credit card, since it is easier to dispute a fraudulent charge”, are some of the other recommendations of the prosecutor so that people do not fall for these scams.
