“It will be a movie night and discussion with the participation of independent creators who are making their way into the local scene. It is a meeting that has the purpose of raising funds for the filming of our next project, called ‘La Comuna’, written and directed by the young filmmaker Linda Maymí-Rivas”said Adrián Borges, organizer of the event and who, together with Maymí-Rivas, is co-founder of the Monovisión collective.
Monovisión will show the award-winning short “The first date”as well as a sample and footage of the award-winning work, “Mom’s Body”both from Borges. Other works that will be presented are: the documentary “I am a star before I die” by director Angeliris Fontánez who won best documentary at the festival “Put on the shorts” of this year. Works will also be presented: “On a walk with…”, “Washy”, “Sapa”, “Atascau”, “The Closet” Y “Mirage”among others.
“We have been thrown into this whole process and we are already seeing the fruits of our collective work, we are La Nueva Cepa, and we are ready to work hard”Borges said. He explained that, although admission is free of charge, the proceeds will be by donation and everything will be used for the costs of filming ‘La comuna’, which begins shooting the first week of August.
Maymí-Rivas, the writer and director of this new project, announced that the new short film “La comuna” is the testimony of a group of circus artists who, after their last show a year ago, have to move from the creative space where they have grown and presented their art for years, because the building will be sold by the owner. It is a story of nostalgia and struggle, related to the challenge of today’s artists. It portrays how artists continue to create, facing new circumstances. Monovisión’s proposal is to film the stories as they are born from the collective, and then group the short films in such a way that they serve to document everything that this generation has experienced, ”he reiterated.
For his part, Borges stressed that, “Making art in Puerto Rico is a colossal challenge, especially in the film genre, but the solidarity that we experience in each project inspires us to continue creating. That is why we are holding a non-competitive Festival of several independent production houses, to show the creativity and union of this new strain”.
“El First Date’, obtained three awards in 2021. It was a semifinalist at the London Indie Short Fest, was awarded best comedy short at the Florida Short Film Festival, and won the award for best director at the LUSCA Film Festival in Puerto Rico. The other short film to be presented, “El cuerpo de madre”, which is still competing in other international festivals, was a semi-finalist at the London Film Fest in 2021, in addition to receiving the ‘La Estrella Borinqueña’ award from the Puerto Rico Heritage Film Fest in New York.
