What are the most suitable beaches for vacationing?

The Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks (Cofepris) shared an analysis of 290 beaches in 75 tourist destinations in the 17 coastal states to find out which were the most suitable for recreational use in these upcoming summer vacation.

Through a statement he gave the results, in addition to noting that more than 2 thousand sea samples of the main tourist destinations because clean beaches are a determining factor for the development of tourist activity, “the engine of the national economy”.

This was done prior to the summer vacations, Cofepris reported that 98.69% of the beaches throughout the country comply with the safety guidelines established by the World Health Organization (WHO), for which they were considered suitable for vacation.

Cofepris, in coordination with state health authorities and the National Network of Public Health Laboratories, analyzed 2,098 samples of seawater. The analysis showed that 287 beaches are suitable for recreational usewhile the beaches Hornos, Suave and Manzanillo in Acapulco, Guerrero, exceeded the established limits of 200 enterococci in 100 ml of water.

He also indicated that for the first time since Easter last year, Hermosa Beach in Ensenada, Baja Californiareflected levels suitable for use. “This achievement is the result of joint work between federal, state, and municipal authorities to protect the health of Baja Californians and tourists,” she wrote.

It should be noted that the aforementioned beach has presented “historical” results of elevated enterococci, which is why the State Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks in the entity (Coepris-BC) will carry out constant monitoring during the holiday period to ensure that the water is of good quality.

The samplings allow monitoring the bacteria Enterococcus faecalis and the importance lies in prevent health risks to protect the health of the population. This can be done through the Seawater Surveillance Program for Recreational Use with Primary Contact.

It should be noted that this bacterium is resistant to adverse conditions and develops in an environment with 6.5% sodium chloride (salt) and between 10° and 45° C. Likewise, Cofepris pointed out that beaches are a determining factor for the development of tourist activity.

“Cofepris urges the population to keep our beaches clean during the holiday season, since it is everyone’s responsibility,” he said.

It is important to mention that the bacteria Enterococcus faecalis it can be spread by contact with fluids or contaminated surfaces, it lives in the gastrointestinal tract harmlessly; however, if it spreads to other parts of the body it can cause serious infections.

In recent years it has been found that the increase in strains of the bacteria causes them to be resistant to antibiotics. Symptoms include: fever, chills, headache, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, among others. However, the best diagnosis is that of a specialist doctor.

The recommendations to prevent infections by this bacterium are to wash your hands constantly, especially before eating, and to maintain good hygiene.

On the other hand, from preschool to high school, millions of young people will be able to enjoy the vacation period dictated by the Ministry of Public Education, starting Thursday, July 28 and until Monday, August 29 for the new school year 2022-2023.
